Hotchkiss, CO – When Hurricanes Irma and Maria ripped through the U.S. Virgin Islands in September, Jo Moniak Edmondson, Founder of ShadeScapes Americas, watched the destruction happening on St. John and felt helpless. Moniak Edmondson who owns a home on St. John, but resides in western Colorado where ShadeScapes is headquartered, was desperate for information about friends’ well-being and the condition of her home. She joined an incredible online community of stateside owners and travelers who came together to share what they knew about the damage and to rally support for recovery. The stories of heroism were inspiring and the devastation heartbreaking. As a business owner herself, she knew how overwhelming rebuilding a business would be and that’s when her vision for the St. John Shade Project was born.

“As a St. John homeowner and a business person I wanted to find a way for my company to support the long-term recovery and beautification of the island,” says Jo Moniak Edmondson, “St. John is still beautiful, but there is definite fatigue in every area. Installing attractive umbrellas at the restaurants will help the island feel more livable and will provide much needed shade where locals and tourists gather.”

ShadeScapes Americas then made a commitment to donate 30 umbrellas to island restaurants. But when Moniak Edmondson visited the island in early December, she found the need to be much greater. Instead of the original commitment of 30, she is bringing 50 umbrellas to St. John the week of Valentine’s Day 2018 by donating a percentage of the company’s sales back to the project and garnering support from others who love the island.

“Alongside the natural beauty of St. John, the restaurants define the island. Everyone heads to these wonderful places to enjoy the open-air settings, meet people and have the real St. John experience,” says Jo Moniak Edmondson, “The restaurants are vital to tourism and they are all working hard to rebuild, reopen and get their lives back on track. Donating long-lasting shade umbrellas to those who need the help feels right to us, and we are thrilled to find our way of contributing to the island’s comeback.”

ShadeScapes is covering all shipping costs and will install all of the high-end umbrellas being donated to many of St. John’s favorite restaurants. A list of some of the recipients can be seen HERE.
